Maybe they're grey
Maybe they're green
Maybe they'll think that our lips are obscene
Maybe they're pink
Maybe they're blue
They probably don't look like you
Maybe they're tall
Maybe they're thin
Covered with scales instead of with skin
Maybe they're short
Maybe they're round
How can we know till we've found
them
Somewhere round stars too remote to be seen
or maybe round Alpha Centaur(i)
Somewhere there must be some creatures like us
Who share in our need to explore.
Maybe they don't
have any hands
Maybe they speak using pheromone glands
Maybe they roll
Maybe they glide
Maybe they glisten and slide
Maybe their shape
Hasn't a norm
Maybe their structures are really free-form
Maybe their heads
Don't sit on necks
Maybe they've never had sex,
but
Somewhere round stars just a parsec away
or in M31, right next door
Somewhere there must be some creatures like us
Who share in our need to explore.
Maybe they're not
Solid, but gas
Maybe their maxim says "All flesh is glass"
Maybe they bleed
H2SO4
That might be hard to ignore
Maybe their mind's
Silicon-based
Maybe their memories can't be erased
Maybe their breath
Might make us sick
That first impression could stick
but
Somewhere where nebulae brighten the skies
Or close to the galaxy's core
Somewhere there must be some creatures like us
Who share in our need to explore.
Maybe they form
Family groups
Maybe they're more like orangutan troupes
Maybe they breed
When they mature
by parthenogenesis pure
Maybe they war
Maybe they kill
Maybe they'd conquer us just for the thrill
Maybe they've grown
wiser than we
Maybe they still watch TV
but
Somewhere where we haven't gotten to yet
Where no human has gone before
Somewhere there must be some creatures like us...
And some day we'll know them, I'm sure.
