Credo

Music and lyrics copyright ©2004 by Blake Hodgetts

To a certain extent, the music of the chorus of this song was inpired by
Terence Chua's song, "Pulp Fiction". I consider that song a parent, or perhaps uncle, of this one.

Ah, once our world was wild with wonder;
In nature's splendor nestled magics unknown.
The hammers of the gods rolled thunder,
And lightning sparked from Zeus's throne.
But now our ignorance has faded,
And something else assumed its place.
Though for all we lust and yearn,
Still in thrall we must return,
Searching for that blissful state of grace.
And I believe in wonder,
I believe in miracles,
I believe in magic...if only in my mind.
I believe in wonder,
I believe in miracles.
I believe in magic...if only in my mind.

Fears may chill and wishes tremble:
The need to know has long defined humankind.
Cold explanations crush and crumble
Fantastic hopes of heart and mind.
However fervently we clasp them,
We know our treasured dreams can't be.
Still, the lines of thought have play;
Agile minds have wrought this way:
We can let suspension set us free.
And I believe in wonder,
I believe in miracles,
I believe in magic...if only in my mind.
I believe in wonder,
I believe in miracles,
I believe in magic...if only in my --
"...mindless entertainment for the masses..."
Can such things bring my miracles to me?
I've lost my magic x-ray glasses...
Sometimes I need to close my eyes to see.
There is a fellowship of dreamers
Who are devoutly bound to one holy creed.
Creative works, our souls' redeemers,
Sown by imagination's seed.
And though we thirst for mortal knowledge,
So too we fly beyond its bounds:
Film and art and song and story,
In each heart we long for glory.
"Credo" rings the echo that resounds.
(background voices sing)
I believe...
I believe...
I believe in my mind
I believe...
I believe...
I believe in my mind
(background voices, above, continue under following:)

I believe in dragons;
I believe in unicorns;
I believe in wizards;
I believe in rings that bind;
I believe in fairies;
I believe in wishes coming true;
I believe in magic,
If only in my mind.

I believe in aliens;
I believe in UFOs;
I believe in wormholes
I believe that someday we'll find;
I believe in starships;
I believe in time machines;
I believe in magic,
If only in my mind.

I believe in angels;
I believe in goddesses;
I believe in heaven;
I believe in hell of some kind;
I believe in demons;
I believe in sorcery;
I believe in magic...
If only in my mind.
